Description
Twenty “Action This Day” stickers, which Winston Churchill put on correspondence to indicate a sense of urgency and ensure the item was taking care of immediately. These are brand new stickers and maintain the look of the stickers that Churchill used.
They measure 2.5” x 1.5” and are matte red with black lettering.
The most famous example of Churchill’s use of this sticker was to provide more resources to the team in Bletchley Park, who were working to break (and were eventually successful in breaking) the Nazi Enigma codes in World War II.
For those interested in learning more about the history of how Churchill used these stickers, there’s a short article on the Winston Churchill Society site explaining how “Action This Day” became a Churchillian catchphrase.
In addition, there is a recently published book by David Price entitled, “Geniuses at War: Bletchley Park, Colossus, and the Dawn of the Digital Age,” where on page 66 he lays out the background of the “Action This Day” phrase. He notes that following Churchill’s request, the codebreakers’ staffing needs were given “extreme priority.” It’s worth noting that whereas Price says the phrase of “Action This Day” was on “an apparently rubber-stamped notion,” an authentic sticker version recently sold from a UK bookseller. That sticker had solid provenance, as it was passed down from one of Churchill’s secretaries.
This is not only a cool remembrance of World War II history, but it can serve as a great impetus to get your coworkers or others to ensure that they “Action This Day!”
