Description
For your consideration is this LARGE genuine
MADE IN GERMANY
vintage Gerz hand painted stoneware ceramic beer stein. To the best of my memory, my uncle brought this stein home from Germany sometime back in the 1960's and I remember it was old back then. I am not for certain exactly how old the stein is but I've been told it is very old.
The stein features
raised relief images of
a German man and woman dressed in traditional German attire sitting/standing at a table outside under a tree. On either side of the German couple are traditional German houses, cottages and castles. On the left side of the stein, inside an image of an opened scroll, located alongside the handle are the German words "
IN LUST'GER MITT, ALL SORGEN GUILT
". I was advised (I'm not for certain) the aforementioned German words translates into English to read,
"
In the midst of merriment all concerns cease
". On the outside of the stein, directly beneath the handle, is the number "
1804
"; it is unknown what this number may or may not represent. Please refer to description photo #8 for more details about what I have described and for more details about the stein.
If you collect antique and/or vintage German steins please take a moment to look at the other German steins I currently have listed to see if perhaps you may be interested in bidding on these other beautiful pieces as well. This exquisite looking genuine vintage German made stein has multiple vivid colors with raised images and decorative details. The stein measures approximately 8.0" tall from the bottom to the top. The stein's bottom measures approximately 4.25" in diameter and approximately 3.25" in diameter at the top. The handle on the side of the stein is approximately 4.50" long.
The stein still retains the original hinge portion of the pewter lid that once adorned the top of the stein. Unfortunately the lid was carelessly broken off and lost many years ago. Nevertheless, the soft pewter hinge could easily be cut off and removed from the handle if the new owner of this fine piece so desired. In all honestly, the missing lid never concerned me since I only used this stein for display. Please refer to the description photos for more details about what I have described.
As is commonly found on these old vintage German steins, the glazing has very small and extremely fine crazing from honest age but this condition is barely noticeable without close-up examination and does not affect the functionality of the stein. Aside from the aforementioned crazing and missing lid, the stein remains in very good condition and is free from any damage and/or repairs.
Please refer to the description photos to confirm the condition of the stein and for more details about what I have described.
The bottom of the stein is imprinted with the words "
MADE IN GERMANY
" along with a couple of other very faint factory impressions that appear to include a "triangle" shape containing a smaller image (possibly a small stein design) that is imprinted within that triangle. I discovered in reading
Kirsner's Beer Stein Book
, this particular triangle looks a lot like (not for certain) the same design
that represents an early proof mark used by Gerz in the late 1800's. See below...
.
19th century Gerz proof mark
This proof mark is found on Gerz items produced in the last quarter of 19th century.
In addition, there is also a very faint number "12" imprinted into the stein's bottom; I do not know what this number represents. Please refer to description photos for more details about what I have described.
Overall, this is an absolutely beautiful looking genuine vintage German made stein. This stein makes a stunning display and I am certain any stein collector would genuinely appreciate acquiring this fine looking piece for their collection.
