    1ST BASEMEN'S MITT
    ?ARMY SPECIAL SERVICES?
    VINTAGE
    WITH DEFECTS
Up for sale is a vintage Rawlings first baseman's mitt for a right-handed thrower.  The mitt belonged to my late father-in-law and I believe it dates from the 1940s.  It is in rough condition with significant wear.
There are some superficial cracks and worn areas on the outer leather and one split about 1 inch long on the outside of the glove (see photo). The leather coating on the inside has deteriorated and is peeling away, and the straps for the fingers on the inside are stiff, cracked, and likely split.
It is not in good playing condition in its current state, though it
may respond to some leather reconditioning and TLC, which I've left up to the buyer.
On the right side of the inside pouch is the word "Services," which leads me to believe this is one of the special issue Army Special Services mitts from the 1940's.  In my research, I came across information indicating that the Army Special Services was a special entertainment branch of the US Army, which is highly possible since my father-in-law was a musician.
There appears to be a number embossed below the Rawlings logo, but it cannot be discerned.
Towards the lower inside palm pad is faint
    embossing
that says "Professional Model" and "Hinged Pad." As far as I know, these are the original laces.  The rivets appear to be intact though they are showing some bluish oxidation on the outer edges, but this appears this could come off with some detailed cleaning.  The sheepskin lining on the back strap is intact.  I do not see any writing or names inscribed on the leather.
