Description
Here is a vintage mid to late 1960's Rawlings Elston Howard endorsed baseball catchers mitt or glove for a RH thrower. The glove may not have been used as it looks fantastic. Nice smooth leather and not broken in (just a little bend in the break at the bottom right. The mitt is youth to adult size and measures 12" long through the pocket. Web Lock, Professional Model, Deep Well Pocket, Hinged Pad, Rawlings U.S.A. and Elston Howard stamped on the front. The Finest in the Field and one dot (date) stamped on the back ant the mitt has a beautiful red Rawlings cloth patch. No owner's ink. The mitt measures 11" long through the palm and measures 10.5" straight across. It measures 32" around.Faint name on the back of the thumb (above "A Rawlings Claw") and a doodle "L" at the bottom of the backside of the thumb. Also LUKE written in marker on backside of mitt, which can still be read. The backside also has some small dark spots here and there. The inside stamping is all readable with just a little silver still showing here and there. A nice intact red Rawlings patch on the back. The leather is still soft on this quality mitt. Interior leather is soft but has chafing and is torn up where the first two fingers end up inside. After I listed this I realized a couple of lace holes by the bottom of the pinky side were missing the laces. So I added some lace there now and added one more picture to show you that. A nice display mitt from the mid 1950's. I see this mitt listed in the 1967 and 1968 Rawlings catalogs.
No owner's ink on the mitt. Mitt may not have been used. There is a little divot in the leather on the backside to the right of the Rawlings patch. Mitt has soft covered vinyl covered cloth piping around the backstrap which shows wear from shelf life, mainly in the area where the backstrap is folded over by the patch. Smooth interior leather. Great looking and feeling vintage mitt.
Elston Howard played from 1955-1967 for the New York Yankees and part of 1967 and all of 1968 for the Boston Red Sox. He played in 10 World Series and with the Yankees he helped win the World Series in 1956, 1968, 1961 and 1962. He was a 12 time All-Star and won the 1963 American League MVP!
I have other gloves and mitts on eBay ending now and I like to combine shipping whenever possible. If you win more than one glove you'll have to pay the grand total for shipping. But I'll refund you the difference back on the price of combined shipping. Or I'll send out an invoice if possible.
