Lithopane Couple German Artillery Regimental Stein Dated 1900 Twist Lids Original. Excellent, no chips/cracks/damage; top lids turn freely; size: 9.75” h.
This appears to be original from the era, having these differences from recent reproductions:
1) The motif matches the scenes, i.e. it is an artillery shaped lid and the motif is artillery, not infantry or aircraft (and the weapons are correct for the era);
2) The names of the other soldiers in gold near the handles are last names (originals rarely used first names);
3) The handle has no bump (modern ones do);
4) The soldier in the lithopone seems to be standing correctly (modern ones usually have left leg splayed);
5) wear to paint around the base is commensurate with having been held and used;
6) gold buttons on uniforms are painted, not transferware; and
7) rank (essentially second corporal) is commonplace for the time (i.e., not a high ranking officer).
