Description
RAREThis is a reproduction of a Westerwald stein from the early 18th century. The center band consists of four rows of relief rosettes on a background of cobalt blue. The upper and lower bands are a combination of oval- and heart-shaped relief in alternating blue and brown colors.
Height:
8¼"
There are a total of twenty-six steins in the series, representing a wide range of styles, both in body and lid design, most of which are substantially more attractive than the “run-of-the-mill” examples of early Westerwald steins that regularly appear in stein auctions. Moreover, the Gerz reproductions come without the chips, cracks, dents and other flaws that often mar the appearance of the originals. As a group, the steins in the series make a wonderful display, likely to draw favorable comments from even the most discerning collector. (Figure 3)
In addition to the appearance factor, price is no small consideration. On those rare occasions when I have come across original early Westerwald steins that were aesthetically comparable to those in the
Limität
series, the prices ranged anywhere from ,500 and up — amounts well beyond the typical collector’s beer stein spending limits. For even the most sought-after
Limität
steins, prices remain well below that range.
