Description:
Antique German beer stein made by Villeroy and Boch/Mettlach - the most famous beer stein manufacturer. Made of pottery in PUG (print under glaze) technique unique to Mettlach.
The stein belongs to the series of 3 steins with musical motive - 2349/1023, /1024 and /1025. There was also a pouring stein for this series - 2348/1022.
This stein depicts a man - a traveling musician - in medieval costume playing a fiddle. The inscription reads:
"Musik und Bier lieben wir"" - "We love music and beer!"
Marked with 2349 incised Mettlach model number, 1023 decoration number and 09 for the year of production 1909. The word "Geschutzt" - "Protected" refers to the German patent law. Number 31 is the quality control number.
The lid is pewter with a thumblift showing a radish - a popular German beer snack.
Please note - Mettlach also made beakers with the same design. The beakers are quite common - they were for some reason the most popular beakers at the time. The steins of the series are more scarce.
The stein is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks, no staining of the interior.  It is 5" tall, 0.3L capacity.
