    Description

    Antique Mettlach Villeroy & Boch
    Beer Stein 1394 .5L German Cards 1898
This is a beautifully etched .5 Liter stein by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach, Germany in 1898.
It depicts the German "four suits" on playing cards: bells, hearts, leaves and acorns.
    The writing is
“Ob du Verlust hast, ob Gewinn,
mit leichtem Sinn nimm Beides hin.”
(Whether you have a loss or a win,
    accept both with lightheartedness.)
The top inlay has a barley and hops relief and the thumb lift also depicts these two primary beer ingredients.
This would make a fantastic addition to your collection!
On the bottom, it has the standard Mettlach Abby/Tower mark along with the Villeroy & Boch mark and a faded Mercury mark. There is also “GEGEN NACHBILDUNG” – protected against copying and the mold # 1394.
It also has “35” markings – for quality control and “98” – year code 1898. The stein measures 6-1/2'' to the top of lid and 7-3/4" at the thumb lift with a diameter of 4 1/4” at the base.
This stein has been well-cared for and is in very good condition for a 123-year-old piece - there are no cracks, chips or crazing.
It does show some wear in the normal places and the pewter
    lid has a beautiful patina.
There are a couple small dark spots on the lid along with minor discoloring on the inside of the lid’s inlay – please see the photos.
I have not cleaned this more than a dusting with a soft cloth.
The stein will be carefully packaged, double-boxed and insured for shipping.
