Antique Mettlach Villeroy and Boch Beer Stein Etched Munich Child #2002 c.1901Description:
This absolutely fantastic beer stein was made by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach in the year of 1901. It is made in the etched technique creating a wonderful effect - the most famous Mettlach etched technique was never matched by any other manufacturer. The design is attributed to Otto Hupp - one of the most famous Mettlach artists.
The stein
is dedicated to the city of Munich - it shows a view of the city with the Munich Child - the symbol of the city of Munich for many centuries - on the front view. The text on the bottom reads:
“Wer nie mit einer vollen Maass auf einem Münchner Keller sass,
der weiss nicht was vor andern Völkern der Liebe Gott Bayern gab.”
(He who has never sat in a Munich cellar with a full liter of beer,
doesn’t know what God gave to Bavarians in preference to other people.)
The lid is made of pewter - a fantastic fancy lid with the thumblift featuring the Munich Child spreading his arms in the cross-like image. The relief decorations show a view of the city of Munich with the famous Frauenkirche Twin Towers.
The stein is fully marked on the bottom with Mettlach tower mark, mold number 2002 and "01" for the date of manufacturing 1901.
The stein is in perfect mint condition there are no chips, crack or repairs and clean interior. It is very elegant and impressive, 7.25" tall,
