Antique Mettlach V&B Beer Stein St.Florian Firefighter by Otto Hupp 1L c.1901Description:
This antique German beer stein is quite famous. Everybody who collects Mettlach ceramics or antique beer steins knows this masterpiece created by the most famous Mettlach artist Otto Hupp.
It represent St.Florian, who was considered the patron of firefighters in Germany and shows the Saint pouring water on a burning village. Apparently the fire was started by the flame-breathing Dragon that serves as the handle of the stein.
The main decoration is made in etched technique - the signature technique for Mettlach wares, a technologically difficult and expensive. The inscription reads:
“Hilf Du heil’ger Florian,
wir fangen’s zweite Löschen an.
(Help thou Holy Florian,
we begin the second extinguishing.)
Where the "second extinguishing" is the extinguishing of someone's own thirst with a good serving of their favorite brew.
It was manufactured by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach in the year 1901. Marked with Mettlach incised tower mark, model number 1786 abd the year mark 01 for the year 1901.
The stein is in excellent flawless condition - there is no chips or lines and the inside is white and clean. This is the larger version of the stein - the 1 liter verison. It is quite rare - the one liters were made in smaller quantities and
The stein is large and impressive, standing 10.25" tall, 1L capacity. Quite heavy..
