Antique Mettlach Beer Stein Etched #2302 Etruscan Style Children Playing Music c.1898
Description:
Antique German beer stein made by Villeroy and Boch/Mettlach - the most famous beer stein manufacturer. Made in the "etched" technique the famous Mettlach etched production that made it so famous.
The theme of the stein is a humo
rous procession of of children playing musical instruments. The children are wearing the ancient Greek/Roman clothes and their silhouettes are drawn on a dark background in the so-called "Etrsucan style". This style mimics some ancient Etruscan or Greek vases - Etruscs were the civilisation 700 - 400s B.C. in central Italy constantly who were fighting (and defeated) with Romans. Their cukture was much influenced by the ancient Greek culture.
There are several Mettlach steins made in this Etruscan style - namely models 2191, 2192, 2193, 2201, 2383. They are all signed by Henrick Schlitt - one of the most prominent Mettlach artists. This one is not signed but it is save to assume it was created by the same person.
The stein is marked with Mettlach incised tower mark, model number 2302 and 98 for the year of production 1898. Number 87 is the control number.
The pewter lid is inlaid with ceramic decorative etched inlay
in the same manner as the body.
The inlay is showing musical symbols, and the thumblift is made in the form of a lyre - the stein was most likely made as a "occupapational" for the musicians of all kinds.
The stein 8" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. The stein is in excellent condition - there is no damage or repairs, the interior is clean with just a minor darkening. The lid
is sitting tight.
