    Description

    An antique Mettlach 1/2L German beer stein, mold #1675, by Villeroy and Boch depicting Heidelberg Castle and the town of Heidelberg, Germany. This stein is a bit more unique and special because it has a custom lid with copper inlay depicting a tavern scene and a figural thumb lift depicting Perkeo, who was the dwarf keeper of the Heidelberg Tun, the largest wine barrel in the world. Perkeo was a colorful character and was said to imbibe in the wine from time to time. The lid has a maker’s mark on the inside from Heidelberg, Germany, likely the pewter shop that made the lid. In addition, the rim of the lid is inscribed and made out for a special occasion with the date of Dec 2, 1891, which would fit with the year the stein was made, marked on the bottom “90” for the year 1890.
    The stein measures 9 1/2” tall to the top of the pewter thumb lift and is in very good condition with no chips or cracks, but there is a very faint hairline in the lower handle area (see photo) This is quite minor, but for the sake of full disclosure, it is being called out.
