    Description

Antique Jugendstil Beer Stein Brown Glaze Military Shooting Prize Marzi&Remy #2223 c.1914
    Description:
This beautiful stein was made by Marzi and Remy in the early 1910s. Very typical Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) style. Simplistic geometrical decorations. The design seems quite obvious right now but at the time it was a revolutionary concept. The simplicity of decorations and its geometrical pattern were part of a new artistic ideology of Art Nouveau/Jugendstil. .
The Jugendstil beer stein of Marzi and Remy were often design by prominent and famous Jugendstil designers and art professors like Albin Mueller, Bruno Mauder, Richard Riemerschmid, Karl Goerig, etc. This particular stein was designed by Herta Casten (Kasten) - one of the very few women beer stein designers.
The stein is made of saltglazed stoneware with brown glaze over it - an attempt by Marzi and Remy to imitate highly successful Jugendstil stoneware by Reinhold Merkelbach. The same form and decor exists in gray stoneware as well but the brown one is more rare.
The lid is pewter engraved with a presentation inscription: "M.E.B. II Preis" and "2.inf.Rgt.Kronprinz Preis Schutzen 1914" - it means that the stein was a second prize in a shooting competition of the Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment #2 "Kronprinz" in 1914.
The stein is 8.5" tall, 1L capacity. Excellent flawless condition.
