Antique German Jugendstil Beer Stein Military Souvenir F.Ringer Style c.1915Description:
Great stein in Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) style. Simple but elegant design in classical saltglazed stoneware with a humorous enameled medallion scene of a Bavarian gentleman offering his hand to a Bavarian lady.
The medallion is decorated with a heart and also with radishes, pretzel and sausages - the favorite German beer snacks. The inscription reads: "Reich mir die Hand mein Leben" - "Give me your hand my love". I am not sure if this is the straight forward message or if there is some double-meaning to it. I suppose there could be some word-play with the word "reich" but my German is not good enough to get the joke.
This style - a cylindrical plain stoneware stein with enameled humorous decoration is usually called "Franz Ringer style" in the name of the most prominent artist who created many and many beer stein decorations of this kind.
The stein is also a World War I souvenir - the pewter lid is engraved with the presentation inscription that reads: "Kriegsweihnachten 1915" and "Bayr.Etappen Hilfs Komp No.1" That means the stein was a Christmas gift in the war Christmas of 1915 from the Bavarian Supply Rear Service Company No.1.
Judging by the capacity marl we can attribute this stein to Marzi and Remy manufacturing company. Blank steins like this were made by several Westerwald firms of the period but this particular capacity mark belongs to Marzi and Remy.
The stein is large and impressive, it is 9" tall to the top of the thumblift, 1 L capacity. Excellent condition.
