Antique German Beer Stein Bartmann Bellarmine by R.Merkelbach c.1916Description:
Unusual German beer stein made by Reinhold Merkelbach - a major name in ceramics - especially Jugendstil ceramics - that produced many collectable beer steins in late 1800s - early 1900s and later until 1970s.
The stein was designed in a very specific manner to mimic well known early beer vessel from 1600s called "Bartmannkrug" or "The Bearded Man Stein".
Another name for this kind of drinking vessels was "Bellarmine" - it refers to a hated by mostly protestant potters cardinal Robert Bellarmine (1542 - 1621).
It was made in 1916 for the firm of Jacob Auer Sohne "Kurkölner" - a company established in 1850. I don't know what exactly the company was - there is an old restaurant called "Kurkölner" in Cologne or maybe it was a brewery.
"Kurkölner" in general is an inhabitant of the Kurfurstentum Köln - the Medieval Cologne Electorate of the Holy Roman Empire. With the exception of the medallion on the back, the stein is an exact copy of a stein from the collection of Art Museum in Koeln.
Made of stoneware with traditional cobalt-blue glaze used in Westerwald for several centuries.
The stein is not marked but I've had this one before with R.Merkelbach manufactiuring mark from the period. Please note - R.Merkelbach produced this stein for several years - some later versions in "Koelnisch braun" glaze. This is the first and original model from 1916. I guarantee my description and dating. Excellent condition with some minor manufacturing flaws - no damge or repair. Please note a small hollow in the upper rim - this is not a chip, this is a small spout made during manufacturing for better liquid flow.
The stein is 6" tall, 3/4 L capacity.
