    Description

Antique Etched Beer Stein Medieval Drinking Scenes by S.P.Gerz #1209 c.1890s
    Description:
This absolutely fantastic antique German beer was manufactured by S.P.Gerz. The stein is manufactured in the "etched" technique - the same technique that made Mettlach so famous.
Etched steins by S.P.Gerz are quite rare - he made just a few. The full-color etched steins by S.P.Gerz are even rarer than usual cream figures on a green background. Unlike Mettlach, the etched steins by Gerz were colored by hand.
The decorations show very nicely designed genre scenes of people in medieval times drinking and playing music - this is the so-called Historismus style of the late 1800s.
The lid is pewter with a ceramic inlay with the text:
"Durst lehrt Trinken" - "Thirst teaches drinking".
The stein is in excellent flawless condition.
A beautiful and important example of beer stein techniques and designs!
Please note - I have a matching S.P.Gerz etched stein model #1208 - please llok through my auctions!
