Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug w/Horse c.1790sDescription:
The beer steins made before 1800 are quite rare - at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated.
This beautiful stein was made in late 1700s, it is guaranteed old give ot take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of grey stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very traditional beer drinking vessel - a type that was produced for over centuries, from mid-1600s to mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the end of 18th century. It was relatively inexpensive but robust and was sold in Germany as well as in many other countries including England and American continent.
The center of the stein features a beautiful stylized horse - a real artistic representation. The decorations are etched into the clay with a sharp instrument, glazed with cobalt-blue glaze, fired and saltglazed.
The lid is pewter with a hollow ball thumblift - this type of thumblifts was used throughout entire 1700s and disappeared in the early 1800s.The lid is engraved with initials "C.R." and "No.9" - this is the tavern number, in old Germany people used to keep their own beer steins in their beloved tavern, the were numbered for an easy access. This tradition is actually still alive even nowadays - in Munich's Hofbrauhaus, for instance, you can see shelves with patron's steins standing on the necks upside down with a lid hanging to expose the number. The lid is marked with a pewterer's mark on the inside. The mark is rubbed - it is impossible to identify the pewterer.
The stein is in very good shape - there is one very tight almost invisible line on a side (see side pic.) but other that that no damage to the body whatsoever. The lid is in good shape with no damege or repairs and is sitting pretty tight.
The stein is 7.75" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. I guarantee the authencity.
