    Description

Antique Early German Stoneware Beer Stein Server Enghalskrug Westerwald c.1680s
    Description:
The beer steins made before 1800 are quite rare - at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. Even more rare are beer steins made in 1600s - there are very few left and most of them in museum or private collections.
This beautiful stein/server was made in late-17th century in the Westerwald area of Germany, it is guaranteed old give ot take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of grey stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very traditional beer drinking vessel - a type that was produced for over centuries, from mid-1600s to mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in Germany reached the highest quality 1700s. It was relatively inexpensive but robust and was sold in Germany as well as in many other countries including England and American continent.
The server was made in the Wesrwald region - the famous pottery land where most of the beer steins in Germany was produced. This one has a very typical form called "Enghalskrug" or "thin neck stein". It is decorated with applied elements and incised motif showing a flower growing from a heart shape, and glazed with cobalt-blue glaze. The applied elements are in form of hexagrams - I don't know if this is a reference to an ancient German brewing symbol, has something to do with Judaica or just a random shape..
The stein is in a very good shape - there are no hairlines or major chips in the body, the neck has a very old and insignificant restoration job.
Please note - this is a very rare condition for a stein this old - a museum quality. I have also include a picture from late Johannes Voght catalog with the similar steinс - different main decor but the same details. It was actually estimated at 600 - 900 Euros.
The stein is large and impressive, standing 8" tall, 1L capacity. I guarantee the authencity.
