    Description

Early Early German Faience Beer Stein Bayreuth Factory Peacock Motif c. mid-1700s
    Description:
Presented is a very impressive and beautiful old German beer stein manufactured in the town of Bayreuth in northern Bavaria, Germany, on the Red Main river in a valley between the Franconian Jura and the Fichtelgebirge Mountains.
Made of faience with hand-painted decorations. It shows peacock asd a fantasy bird - nicely done in some kind of primitive but stylish, traditional 18th-century style.
Nice pewter lid with a hollow balld thumblift.
This type of thumblifts was popular in the 1700s. The type of decoration and the shape of the lid and the thumblift suggest the stein was made close to the mid-1700s.
The stein is in good condition - there are some short tight hairlines at the upper part with and some minor chipping on the rim and glaze wear on the handle but no major chips or cracks in the body. The pewter lid is in good condition with a small hole that seems to be a factory flaw.
This is a good condition for a faience stein this old - faience is a very fragile material, most of the remaining faience pieces have some sort of damage.
    A beautiful antique
