Description
1930s VTG JC HIGGINS X-pert First Baseman Mitt, T-web Trap, Lace up Wrist #404This is a VTG Late 1930s
J.C. HIGGING
S
X-pert Professional First Baseman Mitt
was made by Wilson for Sears. It has an adjsutable T-Web trap which first appeared in late 1930s early 1940s First Baseman Mitts. I could only find one other reference/sale for this mitt in this specific
configuration ( T-web & a laced sherling padded shearling Wrist strap.)
There is no sewn label on the glove but one faint identifying mark on the inside right edge of padding. You can make out
X-pert in cursive font
as found on J.C. Higgins mitts of that period. (see picture)
It is Good condition for an 80+ year old used First Baseball Mitt!
OUTSIDE BACK: The outside leather surface is intact with darkened wear from years of actual use.
Some of the rolled edges on the outside back has worn away but is not broken. The laces on the wrist strap look original. The sherling pad under neath the wrist strap is very clean.
The adjustable laces connecting the top of the T-web may not be original as it looks like laces that held the top of the t-web gave way and were replaced by my father-in-law to make the glove usable.
INSIDE:
The padding is intact and could use a good cleaning. some of the rolled edges show wear but the original laces are there from T-web area to T-web area.
As noted above, you can see the faint marking of
X-pert
in cursive font. It’s the only visable marking.
Leather inside and under the the wrist area is cracked & worn. However, you can still feel the separate thumb section divider as well as to separate areas for the rest of the hand so the glove fits your hand.
This glove came from a household of 56+ years. I was my father-in-law’s from the 1930s & 40s and his sons used it in the 50s-60s.
We’d like to find a good home for this with someone who would appreciate it.
Questions welcome.
