Description
This is a 1 liter etched or incised stein made by Matthias Girmscheid of Germany circa 1900 . It is 13" to the top of the finial of the pewter lid which is firmly attached to the handle through a 5ring hinge. Colorful scene of King Gambrinus holding court with his drinking buddies, one of which needs a little assistance leaving the field. Translation and description from The Beer Stein Library.
“Es spricht Gambrinus Herr und König,
trink mässig, doch trink nie zu wenig.”
(Gambrinus the master and king says,
drink in moderation, but never too little.)
Gambrinus, “the king of beer”, has long been a universal symbol of beer and brewing. It has been suggested that the character may be drawn from the claimed real-life inventor of hopped malt beer, Jan Primus (Johann I), a 13th-century Belgian Duke and President of the Brussels Guild of Brewers.
Excellent condition no chips, cracks, or hairlines. Some minor paint loss on the kings tunic and pewter tear at tang.
